With few technical errors pertaining to the firearms used in the story, I thoroughly enjoyed this story.It has a real-time and humanitarian aspect to it insofar as the main character, Graham, went above and beyond to help others in need, some FAR more in need than he.
That said, Graham made some critical errors that, while easily attributed to his non-aggressive personality, I don't believe a "real" person would do. Case in point is when Twin One and Twin Two came upon the mentally disturbed man and Graham and Bang cowered beneath a vehicle which was mere feet from Mr. Bad Guy. Or maybe it is just ME who has issues with people who cannot or will not stand up and take care of business like Graham failed to do. I just have a hard time believing ANY man (or woman for that matter) would cower so easily in that situation given that he had weaponry which would easily defeat the aggressor and had the ability of stealth to gain control of the situation yet failed to do so. Bummer.
But this only a book, right? And the author can create the personality of each character as he or she desires. Yet I have trouble thinking otherwise given my life-long study of humans and human nature given not only my military background (Combat Arms), my former LEO background with Medical and Haz/Mat background included plus several supervisory positions with many subordinates. I like to watch people and learn about their personalities and foibles to learn what makes them tick.
Just sayin'.
But as such I CAN wholeheartedly endorse and recommend this book to readers who enjoy this genre of story. It's a real page turner and kept me up at times while reading it as it can be quite engrossing and latches onto you quickly.

Although there were a few grammatical errors, they in no way detracted from a very well written story. Many post apocalyptic novels start off strong, but lose me with nothing but military-like armed fighting. Not this book. Yes, there were bad guys, but they were realistic, as were the main characters actions and reactions. The story, the dialogue, the characters, the feelings, and the actions were all realistic, which is rare in this type of fiction. I enjoyed this book. Very rarely do I find a book I like enough to even bother with the sequel, but I really look forward to the next in this series, and will look for others by this author.
I truly enjoyed this book but it's hard for me to pin down what made it so enjoyable for me.
The story centers on Graham, who has rece lost his wife to a viral pandemic that has wiped out all but 2% of the world's population. The virus was released by the Chinese, supposedly by accident, as it was made clear that the Chinese population was not spared.
A woman who is dying of the virus has been watching Graham, and has deemed him a good man. He picks him to care for her 5 year old son. The book then follows him as he tries to make his way to his family's cabin in the woods. Of course he meets others along the way who join him in creating a makeshift family in the cabin. They try to establish some sense of normalcy but, of course, all will not be well.
This book is not an action packed, thrill-a-minute roller coaster ride. It moves along at a very steady pace but is never ever boring. I listened to the audiobook and the story was narrator's voice was calm, even and evoked all the seriousness of Graham's situation.
What I did enjoy about this book was the authenticity of the characters and the insights into their thoughts and feelings. Their whole sutuation seemed very real. They weren't prepared for this and were doing the best they can. The group came together as a family and you can't help but love them and root for them. Graham didn't have all the answers, hesitated in certain situations, and it sometimes cost him.
Graham's group was directly contrasted by the Cascade Peppers, who were prepared in every way. I think my only knock against the novel was that the peppers were TOO well equipped. I mean, they had EVERYTHING. It felt a little over the top. Otherwise, I loved the book and I loved the characters and enjoyed the realism. This is first installment in a five part series. That means there's much more left to tell about this world. I'm excited to see what becomes of it.
I heard of AR Shaw from social media so I got this book free. I love this genre and have read several books by male authors, so I was glad to finally read a series by a female author. This series is wonderful and conveys the necessity of community when trying to survive a SHTF world. I love the details of how the group came together and works together, helps each other. All the characters are interesting and I love Bang and Sheriff. I have bought the second book and am now a big fan of this author and her story telling.
It took me years to discern what it is that I love about apocalypse fiction and in the end came to realize it's a love of simple heroes, doing their best in the face of every adversity possible which this story does in the most perfect ways. It's all their. A darn good story which kept me up till 5am this morning as I read it again and will in a few years time hoping that me and I will never meet such circumstances. But if we were to, I'd look to Graham, Tala and Ennis and seek to emulate their love for their family
With most of the world falling prey to a lethal pandemic, we are introduced to several types of survivors. Some have managed to isolate themselves from the virus and survive in communes, while others are immune but carriers and essentially a mortal threat to the former group. Among the immune are people, including children, just struggling to survive who form groups and me-first individuals, who see no problem in theft or even murder if it helps them get what they want.
Volume 1 presents the initial interactions of these truly plausible groups.
